Improving employee well-being and adapting to new ways of working

At SPIE, employee well-being is an integral factor in the office design process.
“
Open, vibrant spaces that facilitate creativity and communication are vital to attracting talent and retaining employees”
Sylvie Bouquet,
Human resources manager at SPIE Industrie & Tertiaire
This includes having a wide choice of spaces from which collaborators can choose to work throughout the day - from workspaces where they can work in peace to rooms dedicated to conversations, or even small lounges and a coffee corner for convivial moments.
As the Covid-19 pandemic has led to an enormous increase in working from home, the desk-sharing office design in Toulouse is as attractive for the SPIE team as it is for the candidates and clients that visit. In response to the health crisis, SPIE Switzerland adapted to new ways of working as well, switching all meeting rooms at Bern headquarters to a hybrid model to ensure that people could connect to in-person meetings virtually and standardising the IT equipment.
However, creating a pleasant office environment is about more than just providing an array of flexible workspaces. “Comfort is also equally important for employee well-being,” says Markus Jordi, sales development executive and key account manager at SPIE Switzerland. “Our flex offices feature intelligent lighting infrastructure with fully implemented sensors for noise, air quality, presence and temperature.” All of this information is centralised in a digital dashboard and presented on an online kiosk for easy manipulation by occupants. “When it is safe to do so, we are planning to invite our customers and partners to the office, to showcase our new space and allow them to see first-hand our ability to design modern, tech-savvy working spaces,” adds Blerim Rudhani, head of procurement and logistics at SPIE Switzerland. Ease of use, flexibility and adaptation in a building design are all necessary for occupant comfort and well-being, but it is the technology and automation provided by SPIE that keeps these buildings running flawlessly. “We create services for building users,” explains Alban Rolin, head of digitalisation and continuous improvement, at SPIE ICS in Malakoff, France.
“
Our systems, from room reservations, parking management or smart building IoT, are all interconnected and self-learning to allow users to interact with their work environment. We then manage these services from our own hypervisor platforms”

Head of digitalisation and continuous improvement, at SPIE ICS in Malakoff, France
In another example, SPIE ICS’ national service centre, based in Grenoble, France, recently relocated and installed a supervision cockpit, a data centre and an infrastructure modelling room.
“We use several automation technologies to enable us to gain in productivity and quality that also limit the risk of human error,” explains Raphaël Mermond, director of the Grenoble service and expertise centre at SPIE ICS (France). “It is a new way of working that has mutual benefits for both SPIE and our clients.” The specialised rooms can be toured by clients and are a true showcase of SPIE’s technological expertise.
“AIR QUALITY BY SPIE”
SPIE’s inclusive expertise in air quality has become increasingly pertinent since the Covid-19 pandemic began and customers seek to ensure the health and wellness of their employees as they return to the office. SPIE has identified and developed several new innovative technologies to meet this need. For example, Air News Blue, an air disinfection tool using UVC light. Made in France, this solution destroys 99.99% of viruses, microorganisms and bacteria in the volume of air processed. Thanks to the data collected via a solution developed by SPIE ICS, SPIE Facilities monitors and maintains air handling equipment, while offering its customers the most innovative solutions. This type of panoptic air quality management is also present at SPIE Nederland, where Covid-19 LED panels were developed to provide warm light while simultaneously purifying the air.
