SPIE and Royal HaskoningDHV, ready for a sustainable industry

Published on 29 June 2021

Breda, 29 June 2021 – SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, and Royal HaskoningDHV join forces to contribute to the sustainability of industrial sites. Their partnership focuses on identifying, developing and implementing a multi-year programme to help industry players to become more sustainable. Through this collaboration, an essential link is made between the business strategy of the asset owner, the owner and/or manager of the industrial site, and the required investments for its optimisation and renovation.

The European Union has committed itself to making industry completely climate neutral over the next 30 years. Within the 10 upcoming years, the objective is to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55%[1].

A huge challenge that will require a lot of effort. In consequence, many asset owners feel today the need to map out their site and get advice on how to make their assets more sustainable. Royal HaskoningDHV is one such company that can do this perfectly. By teaming up with SPIE, a multi-technical services provider, the implementation becomes possible. The partnership primarily focuses on optimising, and thus increasing the sustainability of non-core and energy-intensive assets, such as steam, electricity, cooling, air, heat or water utilities. With the asset owner, SPIE and Royal HaskoningDHV look for optimisation in the entire chain: from production to consumption.

Providing  flexible services

To address the various challenges of asset owners, SPIE and Royal HaskoningDHV combine their knowledge and strengths. With the help of an investment partner, they can offer flexible services under the form of service contract: as a service. In this case, the assets come into the possession of the investment partner while the former asset owner keeps the use of the utilities (for example X m3 of water, steam or kWh). Meanwhile, SPIE and Royal HaskoningDHV become responsible of the maintenance of the assets. This way, the assets become future-proof, sustainable and predictable, without needing a direct, often large, investment by the industrial site in question. This way, the assets can be adapted to the changing energy needs of European industry.

Lieve Declercq, Managing Director of SPIE Nederland, and Erik Oostwegel, CEO of Royal HaskoningDHV, are convinced that together they can make an important contribution. "To be carbon neutral in 2050, the industry needs to continue to significantly reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. Our partnership is able and committed to scoping, implementing, maintaining and operating promising investments to meet the reduction targets of asset owners”, said Lieve Declercq. Erik Oostwegel adds: "To do so, we leverage our state-of-the-art engineering and asset management expertise from a strategic and operational perspective combined with knowledge of digital application capabilities. Through our financial investment partner, the SPIE Nederland and Royal HaskoningDHV partnership is also able to make this transition program 'asset-light'.
