SPIE provides its expertise to the MontLégia clinic

Brussels, September 26, 2019 – SPIE Belgium, a subsidiary of SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, is proud to have been involved in the construction of the MontLégia clinic, scheduled for completion by the end of the year. From February 2020, this 100,000 m2 facility will be able to accommodate no less than 720 standard inpatient beds and 120 day beds.

The new hospital of the Centre Hospitalier Chrétien (Christian Hospital Centre, or CHC), named the “MontLégia Clinic”, will open its doors in February 2020. Built on the site of the former Patience and Beaujonc coal mines at the western entrance to Liège, near the Cointe Tunnel, the facility will merge the existing services of the CHC’s three Liège clinics: Saint-Joseph, Espérance and Saint-Vincent. The new clinic will provide a complete range of health care services and will employ more than 2,000 staff, who will benefit from state-of-the-art ergonomics and equipment.

In May 2016, as part of a temporary partnership with Cegelec and Close, SPIE Belgium was awarded two contracts with a combined value of €23 million for HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) and Centralised Technical Management (CTM). In partnership with Close, the Belgian subsidiary also secured a contract for energy production (boilers and refrigeration units). In total, no fewer than four SPIE employees and some 30 subcontractors will have worked for three years at the Liège site, with the project scheduled for completion in December 2019.

As Marc-Emmanuel Parser, Project Manager at SPIE Belgium, notes: “For our Building Systems Brussels HVAC Business Unit, the MontLégia Clinic project is so wide-ranging that we are having to apply much of our know-how and expertise”. SPIE was entrusted with the HVAC installations, including the hydraulic hot and chilled water distribution systems and the air treatment and distribution systems, mainly in the residential buildings, as well as the production of chilled water to cool the entire hospital, with a total installed capacity of 5,000 kW.

As Marc-Emmanuel also remarks: “This project will represent a major benchmark for all of SPIE’s future projects”. Not only is the MontLégia Clinic an architectural gem with rooms worthy of a hotel, it is also a high-tech project of which SPIE Belgium is proud to be a part!
