SPIE provides support for Clermont Auvergne Métropole's Sustainable IT strategy

Published on 20 July 2023

Malakoff, 20 July 2023 – SPIE ICS, the digital services company of SPIE France, is providing Clermont Auvergne Métropole with guidance to help the intercommunal structure set out its Sustainable IT (SIT) strategy and therefore ultimately transform its local operations. SPIE ICS has been assigned to complete a comprehensive SIT maturity analysis ahead of drawing up an initial roadmap and bringing stakeholders on board.

Sustainable IT — an integral tool for bringing about ecological change

Clermont Auvergne Métropole, which has a population of almost 300,000, is prioritising ecological change and has chosen digital technology to be one of the tools it uses to reduce its carbon footprint. Through this approach, it intends to not only frame its Digital Applications Department as the driving force behind the Sustainable IT transition it is undertaking, but also to assess the progress of this transition and ramp up the initiatives required. To achieve this, it must devise a long-term approach to guide the region towards less carbon-intensive IT applications.

Clermont Auvergne Métropole's commitment is consistent with the targets laid down in the French REEN Law of 2021 (Réduction de l'Empreinte Environnementale du Numérique), which was enacted to reduce the digital carbon footprint and requires municipalities and inter-municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants to draw up a Sustainable IT strategy for 2025 onwards.

SPIE ICS — a local, long-term partner

SPIE ICS is a subsidiary of the SPIE group, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, and has been working with the city's IT teams for a number of years, focusing on IT management, integration and cybersecurity. Combined with an intricate knowledge of its customer's IT environment, this partnership gives the French DSC, which was awarded the Sustainable IT label back in 2021 (further information about the SIT label here), the opportunity to work alongside the city's teams and fully assess the challenges and benefits of implementing a SIT strategy.

The SPIE ICS assignment began in February 2023 and encompasses several actions:

  • an introductory workshop designed to define the matter at hand and clarify statutory obligations,
  • a stakeholder mapping phase in which the organization's vision is defined,
  • a comprehensive Sustainable IT maturity analysis, in partnership with Infogreen Factory,
  • feedback on that analysis, and an initial roadmap

This support will make it easier to harmonize and leverage community-wide measures and will sustain the momentum generated across the city's departments and among the 1600-strong workforce with the definition of targets and target benchmarks.

"We are proud to be working with Clermont Auvergne Métropole on this major challenge of reducing the carbon footprint of local IT operations. Our teams have gained sustainable IT expertise since acquiring the SIT label, and they are committed to working alongside local ecosystems to transform IT working practices", stated Éric Thivolet, a business engineer at SPIE ICS.
