SPIE UK will supply, install and commission additional Fire Alarm detection and graphics as part of phase 5 extension works
London, November 18, 2019 – SPIE UK, a subsidiary of SPIE, the independent European leader in multi-technical services in the areas of energy and communications, has won an eleven-month contract with Unipres, a manufacturer of pressed parts for automobiles. SPIE will supply, install and commission additional Fire Alarm detection and graphics as part of phase 5 extension works at Unipres’ manufacturing plant in Sunderland.
As part of the contract, SPIE will be installing a new fire detection and alarm control panel in the new plant room of the building, as well as diverting some of the existing loops to the new control panel. The existing loop feeds will also be utilised to create a network to the new control panel. The new extensions will be served with 3 loops and populated with Apollo Discovery multi-sensors, call points and interfaces. The existing format of 110dB conventional sounder beacons will be continued into the new extensions and will be served from the new control panel. In terms of shutdown and sprinkler interfaces, SPIE will be installing 15 throughout the facility, to allow for smoke vent or plant interfaces that may be required in the future.
The alarm detection system being used is a fantastic illustration of SPIE’s smart technology capabilities. During the original installation in 2018, SPIE installed an Advanced Fire Alarm panel, which was one of the first of its kind, with a built in fully operational graphics LED screen. The panel incorporates bitmaps and zone diagrams with live alarm location updates enabling ease of use for the end users.
SPIE has been working with Unipres since 2015, originally undertaking smaller works for a subcontractor which has grown into a relationship where the company now works directly for Unipres as one of their preferred suppliers.
Lewis Reid, Operations Manager, at SPIE UK, said, “We are thrilled that the technology we have integrated into the Unipres facility has proved such a success. By combining smart technology with our engineering expertise, we can deliver an innovative solution that benefits the end user – and, in this case, keeping Unipres employees safe. Our excellent relationship with Unipres is testament to the team’s hard work and technical proficiency and we are delighted that we can continue working together for the foreseeable future.”
Chris Wilson, Manager Assembly Engineering and Maintenance, at Unipres commented, “Phase 2 of the programme was carried out faster than expected, which meant that the completion date was brought forward by three weeks. We were really impressed at how SPIE responded to this last-minute change and will be ready to begin the contract on time despite such short notice. Their previous work for us has been second to none so we are confident that they will deliver the works to the highest standard.”
